THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS GORDON A. HENDRICKSON
Private First Class Gordon A. Hendrickson, 37581785, (then Private) Infantry, Company “H”, 409th Infantry Regiment. For heroism in action. During the daylight hours of 3 December 1944, in the vicinity of * * * , France, an adjacent company was forced to withdraw from their positions when the enemy counter-attacked with self-propelled artillery and armored vehicles. With utter disregard for his life, Private Hendrickson, a gunner, courageously and single-handedly carried his machine gun through a hail of small arms and self-propelled artillery fire to an exposed position. Private Hendrickson poured a stream of fire into the surprised enemy and temporarily halted the hostile counter-attack until the other machine guns could be placed in position and completely repulse the attacking enemy. As a result of Private Hendrickson’s magnificent valor, a hostile counter-attack was halted and an effective defense was formed while preparations were made to continue our advance.
